Midget A Goldwings out of playoffs

The South East TS&M midget A Goldwings ran into some hard luck in their Saskatchewan Female Hockey League quarter-final series with the Southwest Cyclones. The Goldwings were eliminated from the postseason after two overtime losses: 2-1 on Feb.

The Goldwings were eliminated from the postseason after two overtime losses: 2-1 on Feb. 13 in Midale and 4-3 two nights later in Gull Lake.

Jaycee McLellan had the Goldwings lone goal in Game 1. It came midway through the second period, and tied the game at 1-1. Neither team would score again until the Cyclones notched the game-winning goal with 79 seconds to play in overtime.

Riley Schultz was the Goldwings goalie in Game 1.

In Game 2, the Goldwings jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by McLellan and Macy Cugnet, and a 3-1 lead in the second after Presleigh Runge scored. The Cyclones scored twice late in the period to tie the game.

Neither team scored again until the five-minute mark of the second overtime period when the Cyclones notched the series winner.

Aaliyah McLean was in goal for the Goldwings in Game 2.

The Estevan bantam Bearcats dropped a 9-4 decision to the Moose Jaw Mavericks Feb. 17 in Moose Jaw in Game 1 of their best-of-three first round series.

The two teams were tied at 3-3 after the first period, with Caydence Chapman, McKenna Walls and Karmi Olfert scoring for Estevan. The Mavericks, who went 22-0 in league play this season, scored four unanswered goals in the second, and then outscored Estevan 2-1 in the third.

Walls had the Bearcats lone third period goal.

Emmey Rae was in goal for Estevan.

Game 2 is set for Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. at the Power Dodge Ice Centre. Game 3, if necessary, would be the following day in Moose Jaw.

Estevan’s two atom female teams wrapped up their regular seasons.

The Estevan Bearcats finished their regular season at 16-7-1, and third in the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League’s atom division, by splitting games on the weekend. They beat Rosetown’s Western Prairie Red Wings 4-3 on Feb. 16, but lost 4-2 the following day.

Julia Durr scored three times in the first game against the Redwings, and twice in the second. Kaybree Fonstad had Estevan’s other goal in the first game.

Taylor Short was in goal both games.

The Estevan Senchuk Bearcats wound up fourth at 13-9-2, after a 5-1 win over the Weyburn Blizzards on Feb. 16 and an 8-1 victory over the Weyburn Red the following day.

Miley Lockerby and Gracyn Einarson each scored twice for Estevan against the Blizzard. Ella Fornwald had the other goal.

Einarson and Taya Northrop each had hat tricks against the Red. Lockerby also scored twice.

Kiera Barker was in goal for both games.

The atom division will have a year-end tournament in Swift Current from Feb. 22-24.
