Midget AA Bruins beat Storm in showdown

The Estevan Apex midget AA Bruins faced the Prairie Storm Dec. 8 at Affinity Place in a showdown between the top two teams in the Saskatchewan Minor AA Hockey League so far this season, and the showdown certainly met expectations.

Ultimately, it was Estevan who came out on top 3-2 in overtime. Cade Bendtsen scored the winner with 1:47 to play in the extra frame.

The other four goals came in the second period. The Storm scored twice to take a 2-0 lead, but Joey Meredith and Chase Gedak responded for Estevan to tie the game.

Jackson Miller stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced for the Bruins, whose record improved to 16-1-0-1. The Storm, meanwhile, had a 14-3-3-2 mark.

The Estevan TS&M bantam AA Bruins dropped a pair of games in league play, 5-0 to the Melville Millionaires on Dec. 7 and 11-0 to the Prairie Storm the following day in Carnduff.

Keagan Carley stopped 34 shots in the game against Melville and 44 shots against the Storm.

The Estevan Meter peewee AA Bruins lost twice at home on the weekend, 8-1 to the Weyburn Wings on Dec.  7 and 3-2 to the Yorkton Terriers the following day.

Payton Phillips had the lone goal for Estevan against Weyburn, a marker with 5:23 to play in the first period that made the score 3-1, but Weyburn would score once more before the period was out and added four more in the third period.

Chase Borreson and Amy Swayze split the goaltending duties against Weyburn.

The following day, Estevan and Yorkton were scoreless after the first period, but then the Terriers scored twice to lead 2-0 through two.

Kobe Wotta had two goals in the third, with a Yorkton goal sandwiched between Wotta’s markers, to leave Estevan down 3-2 with 12 minutes to play. But Estevan couldn’t bury the tying goal.

Swayze was in goal for the game.
