Midget AA Goldwings continue to roll

The South East midget AA Goldwings female hockey team continued to dominate in league play, as they defeated the Notre Dame Hounds 5-3 on Jan. 18 in Midale.

Jordan Meyers, Brynn Kuntz and Marci LeBlanc scored in the opening 17 minutes of the game to give the Goldwings a 3-0 advantage. Notre Dame would get one before the end of the first.

Haley Labbie scored with seven minutes to play in the second to restore the Goldwings three-goal lead, and Taylor Rooney added to the lead with a goal midway through the third.

Notre Dame would get two more before the game was finished.

Taryn McKinney stopped 21 shots for the victory.

The Goldwings lead the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League’s midget AA division with a 15-1 record. Their next game is Jan. 26 on the road against the Regina Rebels.

The Carlyle midget A Wildcats picked up their first win in Saskatchewan Female Hockey League play this season with a 6-5 win over the Southeast TS&M midget A Goldwings on Jan. 19 in Carlyle.

Neve Stajniak scored with nine minutes to play in the first period to give the Goldwings a 1-0 lead. But goals by Beth McCarthy and Courtney Roppel gave Carlyle a 2-1 lead after the first period.

Katelyn Muchowski scored seven seconds into the middle frame to tie the game, but two goals by Roppel and one by McCarthy gave the Wildcats a 5-2 lead through two periods.

Ally Park scored 83 seconds into the third to pull the Goldwings to within two, and then Jaycee McLellan and Muchowski scored in the final four minutes to tie the game; Muchowski’s goal came with 90 seconds to play.

But Roppel scored what proved to be the winning goal with 68 seconds remaining to lift Carlyle to the win.

Missy Biermann was in goal for the Wildcats. Riley Schultz was the Goldwings goalie.

The Wildcats (1-14-3) will visit the Wood River Ice Cats on Jan. 26 and 27.

The Goldwings (2-10-6), meanwhile, lost to the Ice Cats 3-2 on Jan. 18, and played the Regina Renegades to a scoreless tie on Jan. 20.

The Ice Cats led the Gold Wings 2-0 after the first period, and 3-0 through two. Muchowski tallied six minutes into the third to get the Goldwings on the board, and Macy Cugnet’s goal with seven minutes remaining made it a one-goal game, but that was all for the scoring.

Aaliyah McLean was in goal against Wood River, and posted the shutout against Regina.

The Estevan bantam Bearcats outgunned the No. 2 team in the league’s South Division, the Swift Current Colts, 7-6 in Alameda on Jan. 20.

McKenna Walls scored with 58 seconds to play in the third period to tie the game for the Bearcats, and Caydence Chapman’s goal with 22 seconds remaining was the game-winner. For both players, it was their third goal of the game.

Karissa Elliot had the Bearcats other goal.

Estevan had leads of 2-0 in the first period, and 3-2 and 4-3 in the second, but the Colts took the lead by the end of the second, and still led late in the third.

Emmey Rae was in goal for the win.

The Bearcats (5-10-4) next games are Jan. 26 at the Balcarres Barracudas and Jan. 27 at the Parkland Fire in Melville.

The Estevan peewee Bearcats doubled up the Weyburn Angels 4-2 on Jan. 20.

After a scoreless first period, the two teams traded goals in the second, with Kaylin Wilhelm and Lauren Hassler scoring for Estevan.

Hassler’s second of the game 6:47 into the third gave the Bearcats a 3-2 lead, and Kasenya Einarson’s goal with 44 seconds to play put the game out of reach.

Riley Scott was in goal for the Bearcats.

Estevan (7-9-0) will visit the Parkland Fire Jan. 26 in Melville and the Angels once again on Jan. 27.

The Estevan Senchuk atom Bearcats split games in southwest Saskatchewan on Jan. 20, winning 8-0 over the Southwest Cyclones in Cabri but losing 3-1 to the Swift Current Thunder later that day.

Miley Lockerby was the offensive star against the Cyclones with five goals. Taya Northrop had two tallies and Gracyn Einarson had the other goal.

Lockerby had Estevan’s lone goal against Swift Current. It came midway through the first, and gave Estevan a 1-0 lead.

The lead would remain in tact until the third, when the Thunder scored thrice for the comeback win.

Kiera Barker was in goal for both games.

The Senchuk Bearcats (10-8-1) will visit the Weyburn AtoMc Red on Feb. 2, and then play twice on Feb. 3, as they will host the Western Prairie Redwings at 10:30 a.m. and the Estevan Bearcats at 1:45 p.m. Both games will be played at the Power Dodge Ice Centre.
