Minor female teams have varying degrees of success

Local teams in the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League had varying degrees of success in recent games. The Southeast TS&M midget A Goldwings dropped a 2-0 decision to the Prairie Storm Thunder on Jan. 11 in Balgonie.

Local teams in the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League had varying degrees of success in recent games.

The Southeast TS&M midget A Goldwings dropped a 2-0 decision to the Prairie Storm Thunder on Jan. 11 in Balgonie. The Storm scored late in the first for a 1-0 lead, and added the insurance goal midway through the third.

Aaliyah McLean was in goal for the Goldwings, whose record stood at 2-7-5 after the loss.

The two teams met again on Jan. 13 in Midale, with the Thunder winning 7-1. Julie Frostad had the Goldwings lone goal.

Up next for the Goldwings will be three road games in three days. They will visit the Wood River Ice Cats on Jan. 18, the Carlyle Wildcats on Jan. 19 and the Regina Renegades on Jan. 20.

The Wildcats, meanwhile, dropped two games to the Ice Cats on home ice, losing 4-1 on Jan. 12 and 4-2 on Jan. 13.

Beth McCarthy had the only goal in the Jan. 11 game. It came midway through the third period. By that point, the Ice Cats were up 3-0. Wood River scored once more into an empty net.

Missy Biermann was in goal for the game.

McCarthy opened the scoring in Sunday’s game, and Carlyle led 1-0 after the first period. Wood River scored three times in the second to lead 3-1 after two, and added another goal in the third. McCarthy scored once more in the third to round out the scoring.

Kalli Adams was in goal for the Wildcats (0-14-3).

The Estevan bantam Bearcats dropped a 4-3 decision to the Regina Bisons on Jan. 12.

The two teams were tied at 1-1 after the first period, with Kiley Davis scoring for Estevan. Caydence Chapman upped the lead to 2-1 with a goal 18 seconds into the second period, but the Bisons scored twice in the second and once in the third to lead 4-2.

Hannah Terrett scored for Estevan with three seconds to play in the third.

Emmey Rae was in goal.

The bantams (4-10-4) return to the ice on Jan. 20 against the Swift Current Colts in Alameda. The game starts at 2 p.m.

The Estevan peewee Bearcats split their games on the weekend, defeating the Ochapowace Thunder 6-2 on Jan. 11 but losing 11-6 to the Moose Jaw Mavericks on Jan. 12.

The Thunder led 2-0 after the first period, but the Bearcats roared back with three goals in the second. Lauren Hassler, Kasenya Einarson and Kallie MacMillan scored just over six minutes apart.

In the third, Gracie LeBlanc, Kaylin Wilhelm and Hassler scored to put the game away.

The following day, the Bearcats led 2-0 early in the first, but Moose Jaw’s offence proved to be too much. Wilhelm scored three times and Hassler had the other goals.

Riley Scott was in goal for both games.

Estevan (6-9) will face the Weyburn Angels Jan. 20.

The two atom teams, the Estevan Bearcats and the Estevan Senchuk Bearcats, had their latest showdown Sunday afternoon, with the Senchuk Bearcats dropping a 5-3 decision.

The Estevan Bearcats also played twice in southwest Saskatchewan on Jan. 12, defeating the Southwest Cyclones 3-0, and tying the Swift Current Thunder 3-3.

(Box scores for the games were not available).

The Estevan Bearcats (12-3-1) don’t have league games scheduled this weekend. The Senchuk Bearcats (9-7-1) will visit the Cyclones and the Thunder on Jan. 20.
