Oilers offence comes alive in regular season finale

The Estevan Lions Club U14 Oilers football team had their best offensive output of the season, but still came up short in a 38-20 loss to the Assiniboia Rockets Tuesday night at the Woodlawn Athletic Field.

The Estevan Lions Club U14 Oilers football team had their best offensive output of the season, but still came up short in a 38-20 loss to the Assiniboia Rockets Tuesday night at the Woodlawn Athletic Field.

Coach Paul Duncan said they played a really energetic game and the offence came out firing on all cylinders. The defence played hard against what he called a good, athletic team in the Rockets.

The Oilers opened the scoring, only to have the Rockets score twice to take the lead. Estevan responded with a major of their own to tie the game. Each team scored once more before the first half was over.

Assiniboia had a 21-20 lead at half-time, and then the Rockets shut out the Oilers in the second half.

The Oilers had two rushing touchdowns, courtesy of Talys Brock and Rylan Hansen, and they also had a touchdown through the air to Dorian Sifton.

Those scores represented the Oilers first offensive touchdowns of the year.

“It was fantastic,” said Duncan. “We were working towards that all season. It was one of those times where we needed to break a tackle, and we probably would have done it (scored a touchdown) earlier. The kids played really well and they moved the ball and we finally got that success. It was a long time coming but we finally got there.”

A couple of the Oilers had strong defensive efforts, too.

“Hamisa Kassanga played really well. He had some really heavy hits out there. He popped the ball loose a couple of times. We just weren’t able to recover some of the fumbles. I think he actually created about three fumbles in the game.”

Thomas Harrison was also “fantastic,” Duncan said, as he had a few good tackles for losses on the night.

The two teams will meet again in the first round of the playoffs Saturday in Assiniboia.
