The Estevan Meter Bruins had a significant winning streak going that fell apart early Sunday against the visiting Yorkton Terriers.

Even with the 8-2 loss Sunday, the winning streak had helped the Bruins (9-5-1) get to first place in the Saskatchewan Peewee AA Hockey League and the positives are there for Bruins head coach Aren Miller.

“No matter what the score was (Monday), our segment goal was 5-1 because we had our five games at home and that’s what we achieved (Sunday). We ended up 4-1 in the segment,” said Miller. “I think we’re making tons of strides.”

The previous night at Power Dodge Ice Centre, the Bruins won 6-2 against the Terriers (7-2-3). Carter Onrait notched a hat trick, while Mathias Fornwald, Mason Barta and Ryker Mathison got singles in that game. Ty Fehrenbach got the win in net.

Sunday was a different story for the Bruins. Kade Phillips and Carter Hirsch scored the Bruins’ goals and Ryder Davidson played in net.

“You could tell right from the start it was going to turn out bad,” Miller said. “We got down 3-0 early against a team like Yorkton, who were pretty upset that we beat them Saturday.”

Miller is pleased with the way the season has gone and feels they’ll be in the mix among the top teams this year. Yorkton had only one loss going into the weekend and the Bruins were able to feed them another one.

“What we told the kids after is that as good as the winning streak was and we had things going and we got those extra bounces, we can’t let (Sunday’s) loss lead to a losing streak either,” Miller said. “We’ve got tough teams coming in here. The league’s too even.”

The Bruins’ next action will be Sunday against the Swift Current Broncos.

With some of the best curlers in the world on their home ice, Carnduff served as the temporary home of the Estevan Apex Bruins as they took on visiting Swift Current Broncos Saturday in Saskatchewan Midget AA Hockey League action.

It wasn’t the best result the Bruins have gotten this season as they lost 3-1 to the Broncos, who beat them in the first round of the playoffs last season. Kieran Stewart started the scoring in the game with an assist from Tanner Stovin 13:22 into the first period but the rest of the offence came from the Broncos.

Morgan Wanner stopped 34 of 37 shots in the Bruins’ net.

The next action for the Apex Bruins will be Friday night against the Argos at Notre Dame and Sunday at home against the Lumsden-Bethune Lions at 5:45 p.m. at Affinity Place.
