Sharks compete at Westerns

Members of the Estevan Sharks water polo team played their final tournament of the year at the National Championship League 14U Western Finals on May 13 and 14 in Calgary.

Members of the Estevan Sharks water polo team played their final tournament of the year at the National Championship League 14U Western Finals on May 13 and 14 in Calgary. 

Local athletes competed for Team Prairie, which also consisted of players from Weyburn and Saskatoon. Charlotte, Josie and Alex Andrist were joined by Mikayla Hack, Maria Banulius and Abbygael Birnie on the girls team.

On the boys side, the Estevan players were Cameron Gillingham, Logan Marshall, Dylan Prysnyk, Ethan Elliot and Dierks Milford.

Teams from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba were at the tournament.

The boys team opened the tournament with a 22-3 loss to the Surrey Orcas, a 27-3 loss to Fraser Valley and an 11-4 to Calgary Mako to go 0-3 in the round-robin.

The Prairie team finished fourth in their pool and played Winnipeg in the consolation round semifinal. The game was tied at eights after regulation, and Team Prairie beat Winnipeg 3-0 in the shootout to win the game and advance to the fifth place game.

Gillingham had the Prairie entry’s third goal in the shootout.

Mako defeated the Prairie squad 17-5 to take the fifth place game. Gillingham and Marshall scored for the Prairie team in the contest.

The girls’ team went 1-2 in their round-robin. They lost 19-1 to the Edmonton Tsunami, with Hack scoring the lone goal. Their second game was a 12-6 win over the Calgary Seawolves. Local players accounted for eight of the 12 goals, as Hack and Charlotte Andrist each netted three goals, and Banulius and Alex Andrist also scored.

Their final round robin game was a 9-4 defeat to Fraser Valley. Hack scored twice, and Alex and Charlotte Andrist also scored.

In the consolation round semifinal, the Prairie team lost 12-2 to the Regina Armada. Banulius and Carlotte Andrist scored in the loss.  

Team Prairie finished the tournament on a high note, as they defeated the Calgary Seawolves 21-3 to take seventh. Charlotte Andrist scored nine goals in the blowout win, while Alex Andrist scored three, and Josephine Andrist, Birnie and Hack scored once.
