The Estevan KPC mosquito AAA Sluggers appear to be peaking at the right time.

The Sluggers wrapped up the regular season with a sweep in a doubleheader against the Lumsden Cubs, winning 8-4 and 12-8. The Sluggers finished the season with a 7-15-1 record, and will play the Regina White Sox in the first round of league playoffs this weekend.

Coach Joe Williamson said the team enjoyed solid pitching and good hitting for most of the doubleheader.

“They were big wins,” said Williamson. “They moved us up into seventh, so we got a more favourable first round opponent in playoffs this weekend.”

The games against the Cubs were probably the best day of baseball they have played this year.

“That was the fourth-ranked team in our league, and they handled it fairly easily,” said Williamson.

The Sluggers have a fairly young team, and the coaches have been working on the same things with the players all year. The third-year players played great during the weekend, and the younger players stepped up.

“They have been in most games all year, but the experience has been lacking to finish the games or get over a disappointing loss,” said Williamson.

After league playoffs are finished, the Sluggers will compete at a tournament in Melville the following weekend, and then they will go to provincials.
