The Estevan TS&M Bruins kicked off the 2014 portion of their regular season schedule on the weekend, earning a win and a tie at home.

The bantam AA club drew 3-3 with the Regina Foxes on Saturday, then defeated the Moose Jaw Warriors 4-1 on Sunday.

The Bruins (11-7-3) are now in third place in the south division of the Saskatchewan Bantam AA Hockey League.

On Saturday, the Bruins led 3-1 in the third period but couldn't hang on for the victory.

Head coach Tom Copeland said he was happy with his team's performance, other than the third period.

"We came out flat (in the third). I've got no excuses for it. We weren't ready," he said. "We gotta get rid of these hit to the head penalties, they're killing us right now. I don't know what the solution is. They just gotta figure it out, keep their hands down I guess. It's constantly happening. A couple of those calls were kinda soft, I thought."

Dimitri Kourles got the Foxes within a goal early in the third period, slipping a loose puck in the crease into the net.

Regina tied the game four minutes later when Elliot Grande-Sherbert fired and scored off the rush.

The Bruins had several good scoring chances late in the game, but couldn't solve netminder Caleb Lumbard.

"It is what it is, their goalie's standing on his head. What are you going to do? You can put the world at him and if he's going to make those saves, he's going to make those saves," Copeland said.

Jayden Davis opened the scoring for the Bruins 13 minutes into the game, converting on a centering pass from Cole Fonstad.

Two minutes later, the Foxes tied it on a power play, as Hunter McDonald scored on a scramble in the crease.

Fonstad restored the Estevan lead midway through the second period on his first of two goals on the night.

He scored again early in the third, pouncing on a giveaway and making the Foxes pay for it.

"Our puck movement was great, especially coming out of the break. Our puck movement over the last three or four weeks has been outstanding. You're seeing us move the puck D to D and up very, very well. We just kinda lost that in the third period. They were just a little more ready to play the third than we were," Copeland said.

With Fonstad, who sits second in league scoring with 23 goals and 44 points, contributing to all three goals, Copeland noted secondary scoring is an issue.

Shots on goal were 35-28 for the Bruins.

"We're happy with where we're at. We've just gotta get rid of that five minutes of lackadaisical effort that seems to kill us time in and time out. If we can get rid of that, we're going to be an excellent team."

On Sunday, Fonstad had another three-point outing in the win over Moose Jaw.

His unassisted goal late in the first period drew first blood for the Bruins.

Shae Little potted a power play marker late in the second to add to the team's lead.

Jeremy Bisson got the Warriors on the board early in the third, but Fonstad and Josh Skjonsby added goals later for the Bruins.

The team is back at Affinity Place on Sunday, as they host the Notre Dame Hounds at noon.
