Tyren Dorrance’s success on the field has led to him earning a couple of prestigious honours in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League.

Dorrance, who hails from Alameda and is an outfielder with the Southeast Performance Pump midget AAA Twins, was named the league’s most valuable player on Friday. He also took home the batting title, an award that recognizes the top offensive player in the league.

Both awards are determined by a vote.

Dorrance led the league in batting average (.505), slugging percentage (.632), on-base percentage (.832), on-base plus slugging percentage (1.465) and home runs (four). He was also second in runs batted in (33).

“It still hasn’t even set in quite yet. It’s a huge honour to be picked for MVP and batting awards,” he said.

Dorrance believes he was more consistent than last year, and avoided the hot-and-cold streaks of 2018.

“I worked on power in the offseason, so I had lots more extra base hits and home runs, which I think helped a lot.”

Defensively, he shifted to the outfield and had four outfield assists.

He believes a lot of players could have won the awards.

“It was a really competitive league and I just happened to be on top everywhere,” he said.

The Twins competed at provincials on the weekend, and went 0-3, losing to the Regina White Sox 12-7 on Friday, and 8-5 to the Muenster Red Sox and 4-1 to the Regina Wolfpack on Saturday.

Coach Trent Dorrance was pleased with the team’s play at provincials, particularly the pitching and the hitting.

The next edition of the Mercury will have more on provincials, and the next edition of Southeast Lifestyles will have more on Dorrance’s accomplishments.
