A big win for former Estevan resident

The Saskatchewan Roughriders might have come up short in the first-ever regular season CFL game played at the new Mosaic Stadium, but it was still a night to remember for the fans in attendance.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders might have come up short in the first-ever regular season CFL game played at the new Mosaic Stadium, but it was still a night to remember for the fans in attendance.

And for one former Estevan resident, it was a particularly memorable evening.

Darren Schnell, who now resides in Airdrie, Alta., was the winner of the 50-50 jackpot at the game. The total prize pool was $544,000, so he took home $277,000.

It’s believed to be the largest 50-50 draw for a game in Roughriders history.

The other half went to the University of Regina Rams football team.

The game had a guaranteed 50/50 jackpot of $100,000. But by the four-minute mark of the first quarter, then total prize pool had exceeded the $300,000 mark, and it continued to climb until the draw was made midway through the fourth quarter.

Winnipeg beat Saskatchewan 40-37 in overtime to win the game.
