Alameda’s 64-rink bonspiel was cancelled

The COVID-19 virus forced the postponement of a big sporting event that was scheduled to happen in the southeast this weekend.

The Alameda 64-rink Bonspiel was slated to begin March 26 and continue until March 29 in the town’s skating rink, which would have been converted into five sheets of curling ice for the event.

But due to the concerns over the novel coronavirus, the event was postponed, a few days before strict regulations were put in place that limit the number of people in one room to 25.

“Unfortunately it has come to this but we will not put our communities at any more risk that is already at present,” Bonnie Thompson said in a March 16 post on the event’s Facebook page.

This would have been the first time the event has happened since 2015.

It is hoped the bonspiel will be able to occur in 2021.
