Barrel X action heats up in Estevan

The 2018 Fountain Tire Barrel X Championships are in the books for another year, even though those books were extremely hot if they’d been left out in the sun over the weekend.

The championships took place at the Exhibition Grounds over Saturday and Sunday on the weekend but had to begin a couple of hours earlier each day so the humans and the animals weren’t in the nearly-40 degree heat that blanketed southern Saskatchewan.

Chloe Woods of Moosomin won the open and youth average in the short go qualifiers with a time of 34.811 seconds on a horse named Docs Cartel, with Maddy McGee of Deloraine, Man. second in both categories as well with a time of 35.24 on Alabama Anna.

Woods and Docs Cartel led the points race on the weekend with 29, and Dani Levesque of Carnduff on Hank was second at 27. Daylynn Oliver on Carries Command was third.

Danette Holbrook of Big Beaver won the open points race with 21 on Lucky Little Bugger, with Riley Jonasson of Brandon, Man. on Heeza Juno Too was second with 19 points and Woods was third with 18 points.

Steele Sandlilands of Esterhazy won the peewee division on Saturday with a time of 25.043 seconds and Sunday with 30.514 seconds, both of those on Little Star. Rockglen’s Emmett Heagy was second on Deep Sea Magic with a time of 36.274 seconds Saturday and 35.235 seconds Sunday.

The MBRA winner for the weekend on the open category on Saturday was Kia Rosenbaum of Estevan on Wranglers Baby with 17.548 seconds ($431). In the 2D division, the winner was Woods on Badger (18.632 seconds, $323) and in the 3D division, it was Leah Obach of Kenton. Man. with 19.557 seconds ($323).

Sunday, the open winner was Woods on Docs Cartel with a time of 17.103 seconds, earning $431. Carla Fidyk was the 2D winner (18.183 seconds, $323) and Woods on Badget was the 3D winner (19.116 seconds, $323).

The big cash winner on the weekend was Holbrook on Lucky Little Bugger with a total cash purse of $805 on the weekend
