The Estevan Motor Speedway is going to use pay per view to have its season-opening program of 2020.

The season opener is billed as the Lockdown Showdown, and will happen Saturday at 7 p.m., with all five of the speedway’s classes competing: modifieds, sport mods, stock cars, hobby stocks and slingshots. Forty to 50 cars are expected to be entered.

The race will air on DARN TV, which airs racing programs, largely in North Dakota but has also aired races from Estevan. To order the race, visit https://darntv.com/videos/7588.

The track had to cancel its first four programs of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but did have a practice session on May 23, and president Byron Fichter said their experiences from the practice session will be incorporated into the pay per view event.

Due to ongoing border restrictions, which prevent non-essential cross-border traffic, it will be just Canadian drivers competing, but the drivers will still be competing for points.

Fichter said each driver will be allowed to have three members of the pit crew, and the competitors will be spaced out in the pits to allow for social distancing. There will also be volunteers and some others on the site.

The grandstand will be closed for the event, but spectators can watch from their vehicles in the designated, reserved area to the south of the grandstands. Details on that will be released later.

Fichter said the success of Saturday’s program will determine whether they do it again this season.
