Huskies humbled in Yellow Grass in Big Six action

Suffice it to say, but the Oxbow Huskies have had better days than the one they had Sunday. The team lost 15-3 to the host Yellow Grass Wheat Kings in Big Six Hockey League action, one of the most lopsided games in recent memory.

Suffice it to say, but the Oxbow Huskies have had better days than the one they had Sunday.

The team lost 15-3 to the host Yellow Grass Wheat Kings in Big Six Hockey League action, one of the most lopsided games in recent memory.

It didn’t start out like that. The Wheat Kings took a 2-1 lead after the first period, thanks to a Huskies goal from Klae Bayda, but the second period saw a flurry of goals from the Wheat Kings as they grabbed an 8-1 lead. The third period saw the red light get turned on another seven times for the Wheat Kings, while Taysen Holt and Derek Cooney potted singles for the Huskies.

Friday, the Kipling/Windthorst Oil Kings defeated the visiting Wawota Flyers 6-5. A late comeback attempt by the Flyers wasn’t enough, as Hunter Smith’s goal with 44 seconds left in regulation brought Wawota to within a goal. Ryan Taylor scored two for the Flyers, and Travis Dumaine and Dylan Lamontagne scored the other goals.

Games Saturday between Yellow Grass and Wawota, and Bienfait Coalers and Redvers Rockets were postponed.

As of Tuesday, the league’s scoring race is being led by Carlyle’s Ben Johnstone, who has 11 goals and two assists for 13 points. He’s trailed by Yellow Grass’ Mike Onstad, who has five goals and seven assists for 12 points. The league’s top goaltending mark belongs to Cody Dumaine of Carnduff, with a 1.67 goals against average in three games.

This weekend has a whopping four games on the agenda Friday night with Arcola/Kisbey Combines at Carlyle PureChem Cougars, Redvers at Midale Mustangs, Wawota at Carnduff Red Devils, and Oxbow at Kipling/Windthorst.
