Steve Laycock has skipped SaskTel Tankard championships before but this one might taste a bit sweeter.

He won the 2018 Tankard at Affinity Place in Estevan knowing that by doing so, he’ll be wearing the green jackets for Saskatchewan at the Tim Hortons Brier in March. They beat Saskatoon’s Colton Flasch 9-7 in an up and down Tankard battle Sunday afternoon at Affinity Place.

“This never gets less exciting,” said Laycock. “It’s an absolutely amazing experience and I can’t wait to play in Regina.”

His team, based out of Saskatoon Nutana, has him shooting third stones and Matt Dunstone throwing skip stones, also has Kirk and Dallin Muyres at second and lead. They were down to the C event after a pair of losses early in the week but fought their way through to the final after wins over Brock Virtue in the semifinal Sunday, Scott Bitz in the first playoff game Saturday and Ryan Deis in the C final earlier Saturday.

“It was a really weird week,” Laycock said. “We played amazing at times and we had a couple of blips where we just kind of ran into some hot skips. (Brady) Kendel played really well and (Brock) Virtue had a great game. Today, we were up and down. We had a few off ends and we got a lot of mistakes out of them as well. It was just a little bit of a sloppy final but we came out the right side of it.”
