It’s close to the Christmas break but standings are tight at the top of the Big Six Hockey League.

Heading into Wednesday’s action where the Carnduff Red Devils were at the Redvers Rockets, there were only two points separating the first place Carlyle PureChem Cougars from Carnduff and the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings, tied for second place.

Carlyle lost 7-2 to Carnduff Friday and won 3-2 in Bienfait against the Coalers Tuesday night. Friday, Nathan Deck and Ben Johnstone supplied the goals for the Cougars and Carnduff got a pair each from Nico Anderson and Trevor Geiger. Anderson and Geiger also contributed four assists each. The Red Devils also got singles from Devon Carriere, Brandon Trask and Blake McMillen. 

Tuesday, Johnstone, Kelly Currie and Mitchell Morrison each scored for the Cougars, who got all their goals in the first period. Dylan Lay and Keegan Malaryk scored for the Coalers.

Saturday, Carnduff also achieved success with a 3-0 shutout of the Oxbow Huskies. Geiger, Sheldon Thompson and Tanner Reynolds scored for the Red Devils and Cody Dumaine picked up the goose egg in net.

Also on Saturday, Bienfait won 3-1 at home to Redvers. Dylan Herzberg scored a pair in the third period to help the Coalers come from behind, and Cole Piche got the other Bienfait goal. Drew Hoff picked up the marker for the Rockets.

The Midale Mustangs won their lone game of the week with a 5-3 win at home over the Arcola/Kisbey Combines. Steven Lindenbach led the pace offensively for the Mustangs with two goals and two assists, and Braydon Ganson, Matt Geske and Garrett Sherlock each scored singles. Rhett Palmer scored a hat trick in the loss for the winless Arcola/Kisbey.

Friday and Saturday there will be seven games in the league before the break claims games until Jan. 4, 2019.

Friday, Carlyle is at the Kipling/Windthorst Oil Kings, Yellow Grass is at Redvers and Oxbow is at Midale. Saturday, Carnduff travels to Yellow Grass, Kipling/Windthorst is at the Wawota Flyers, Midale is at Oxbow and Carlyle is at Arcola/Kisbey.
