The Yellow Grass Wheat Kings are on the verge of winning the Big Six Hockey League’s regular season title, but there remains a close battle for other positions in the standings.

Yellow Grass (13-3) sits with 26 points and two games to play. Their two most recent games were two of their best of the season, as they won 10-1 over the Carlyle Cougars – one of the best teams in the league – on Jan. 18, and 8-2 over the Wawota Flyers two nights later.

Yellow Grass was slated to host the Cougars on Jan. 24. (Results were not available at press time).

The team with the best chance of catching the Wheat Kings is the Redvers Rockets, who sit second with an 11-4 record and three games remaining. They defeated the Wawota Flyers Jan. 16 in Wawota, but lost 7-3 to the Carnduff Red Devils two nights later. They recovered to defeat the Oxbow Huskies 10-2 on Jan. 22.

Carnduff (10-5) and Carlyle (9-4-2) sit tied for third, although Carnduff has the tie-breaker because they have more wins. In addition to their win over Redvers, the Red Devils also blanked the Kipling-Windthorst Oil Kings 6-0 on Jan. 18.

Meanwhile, Carlyle’s only games in the past week have been against Yellow Grass.

The Midale Mustangs (9-6) sit fifth with 18 points, but could still finish anywhere from second to seventh. They defeated Kipling-Windthorst 8-3 on Jan. 19 in their most recent game.

The Bienfait Coalers and the Wawota both have 7-6 records, and are tied for sixth with five games remaining each. Wawota’s recent action included the loss to Redvers, a 5-4 win over the Oxbow Huskies on Jan. 18, and the loss to Yellow Grass.

Bienfait, meanwhile, has been inactive since Jan. 12.

Oxbow sits eighth at 4-11-1, Kipling-Windthorst is ninth at 4-12 and the Arcola-Kisbey Combines are 10th at 0-12-1.

The Big Six will have games almost every night until the end of the regular season, which is scheduled for Feb. 2.

Arcola-Kisbey at Bienfait is the only game scheduled for Jan. 25.

Three games are on the docket for Jan. 26: Carnduff at Wawota, Oxbow at Arcola-Kisbey and Carlyle at Midale.

Wawota will visit Bienfait on Jan. 27, Bienfait is at Carnduff on Jan. 29, Wawota is at Redvers on Jan. 30, and Midale is at Bienfait on Jan. 31.

All games start at 8 p.m., except for the Wawota-Bienfait contest, which begins at 7 p.m.
