Wheat Kings take over Big Six lead

The standings remain tight as the Big Six Hockey League enters the final weeks of the regular season. The Yellow Grass Wheat Kings moved into top spot in the league with a pair of victories. They defeated the Carnduff Red Devils 4-2 on Jan.

The Yellow Grass Wheat Kings moved into top spot in the league with a pair of victories. They defeated the Carnduff Red Devils 4-2 on Jan. 12 and the Wawota Flyers 7-4 the following day to improve their record to 11-3 with four games remaining.

Davin Cobbald led the Wheat Kings attack in the game against the Red Devils with two goals. Trevor Geiger had both goals for the Red Devils.

Mike Onstad had a hat trick, including the winning goal late in the second period, in the win over the Wheat Kings. Derek Frater scored twice for Wawota.

The Redvers Rockets moved into a tie for second with the Carlyle Cougars with a 5-3 win over the Wawota Flyers on Jan. 16. In their previous games before beating Wawota, Redvers won 9-6 over the Bienfait Coalers on Jan. 11, and 8-2 over the Kipling-Windthorst Oil Kings.

The Rockets scored three times in each period in the win over Bienfait. Keaton Miller led the way offensively for the Rockets with four goals and an assist, while Wyatt Garagan had a four-goal game for the Coalers.

Eight different players scored for the Rockets in their win over the Oil Kings, with Miller having two goals.

Miller also scored twice in the win over Wawota. 

The Carlyle PureChem Cougars (9-3-2) defeated the Oxbow Huskies 5-4 in their most recent game.

Clayton Geiger scored twice for Carlyle in the game. Taysen Holt led the Huskies attack with two goals and an assist.

The Carnduff Red Devils (8-5) split their most recent games. Prior to losing to Yellow Grass, the Red Devils routed the Arcola-Kisbey Combines 10-0. Kody Martin and Trevor Geiger had hat trick in the game for Carnduff.

The Midale Mustangs (8-6) sit fifth after splitting their most recent games. They defeated Kipling-Windthorst 6-2 on Jan. 11, but were shelled by the Bienfait Coalers 7-1 the following night.

Garrett Sherlock scored twice for Midale in the win over the Oil Kings, while Taylor Van de Sype had four assists.

Dallas Kickley had three goals for Bienfait in the game against Midale.

Bienfait sits sixth at 7-6, and Wawota is seventh at 6-5, but both teams are still relatively close to the league’s frontrunners.

Kipling-Windthorst is eighth (4-1), Oxbow (4-10) is ninth and Arcola-Kisbey (0-12-1) is 10th. The Huskies and the Combines met on Jan. 15, with the Huskies emerging victorious 14-4. Holt had a hat trick for the Huskies.

Lucas Hislop scored two of Arcola-Kisbey’s goals.

Three games are scheduled for Jan. 18: Wawota at Oxbow, Yellow Grass at Carlyle and Carnduff at Kipling-Windthorst. Those games start at 8 p.m.

Kipling-Windthorst visits Midale and Redvers is at Arcola-Kisbey on Jan. 19; both games are at 8 p.m. The following night, Redvers is at Carnduff and Wawota is at Yellow Grass, with both games starting at 7 p.m.

Games on Jan. 22 are Midale at Bienfait and Oxbow at Redvers at 8 p.m. And Carlyle is at Yellow Grass on Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. in a showdown between the top two teams in the league.
