The Oxbow Chiefs have clinched top spot for the regular season in the Saskota Baseball League.
The Chiefs wrapped up first place when the Estevan Tower Wolves dropped a 10-9 decision on the road to the Carlyle Cougars on Wednesday night. Carlyle led 9-0 after the first inning, but the Wolves chipped away to eventually pull within a run.
The Chiefs (13-1) cannot be caught by the Wolves (12-4) sits second, and will be the No. 2 seed in the playoffs as they try to win the Harbourne Cup for the third consecutive year.
There is still a race for third spot. The Cardinals (9-4-1) are third, while the Redvers A’s (10-5) sit fourth. Carlyle has played one less game than Redvers.
Then there’s a drop to the bottom five teams in the standings. The Carnduff Astros (6-8-2) have wrapped up their regular season and will finish fifth. The Kipling Royals (5-9-1) occupy sixth, but could still be caught by the seventh place Arcola Threshers (4-9-2).
The Kenosee Cubs (4-10-2) have finished their regular season and will be the eighth seed, while the Southeast Fireballs (1-14) will finish ninth. They also have a game remaining.
Teams have been busy entering the final week of the campaign. The Cardinals blanked the Cubs 9-0 in the lone game on July 12.
Five games were played July 14. The Cubs routed the Fireballs 9-2, the Wolves blasted the A’s 11-1, the Chiefs edged the Royals 7-6, the A’s edged the Fireballs 12-8 and the Wolves trounced the Cubs 10-2.
Two games happened July 16. The Chiefs defeated the Wolves 9-6 in a showdown of the top two teams in the league, and the Astros hammed the Threshers 14-3.
Remaining games are Carlyle at Kipling on July 22, and Arcola at Oxbow on July 23. Both games start at 6:30 p.m.
The Harbourne Cup tournament will happen in the final weekend of July.
