The Black Knights cheer team for the Oxbow Prairie Horizons School made an excellent first impression, as they won top spot in their division at the Best of the West competition at the Evrax International Trade Centre in Regina Saturday.

Competing in an event for the first time, the Knights won the intermediate division for Grade 7-12 students at Best of the West.

Coach Velvett Mamela, who has an extensive background in the sport as an athlete and a coach, started the program for Oxbow this year. It has proven to be a great idea, as the girls have supported each other and have made a lot of friends.

She decided to enter Best of the West because there are a lot of talented teams who enter, and she thought it would be good for the Knights to see those athletes.

They finished with a score of 88.6, and had zero deductions.

“We usually practice like that, but to do that at the first competition is really unexpected,” she said.

The members had really high energy, and they hit all of their stunts.

This week’s edition of Southeast Lifestyles will have more on this story.
