Drag racing at the Estevan Airport will not happen this year, due to pavement rehabilitation, according to Estevan Drag Racing Association (EDRA) president Jim Forrest.

“We are so grateful to the airport and to the city for letting us use the airport for the past 12 years. “We’ve had a great time, and we’ve established the fact that you can run successful drag races in Estevan,” he said. “We’re happy that the airport is getting their new pavement and we really appreciate everything they’ve done for us.”

Since there will be no race season, Forrest said they will be focused on fundraising for their new facility and promoting it as well.

EDRA already has a spot for the new track, located by the Estevan Motor Speedway, and now it’s just getting everything in place to get it built.

“We’re proceeding to get stuff in place, the goods, services and money that is needed to build a race track,” Forrest said.

Research and commitment has already gone into the process of building the track.

“We already have the land, and we already have some preliminary work done. We got our soil samples out, we’ve got a topographical survey done and we got our design done,” Forrest said.

Throughout the years of drag racing at the airport, Forrest has noticed the increased interest in the program, and it has attracted many drivers from southeast Saskatchewan.

“We’ve actually brought in a lot of new racers … and overall it’s been a good thing for us,” Forrest said.

He also mentioned there are people within the EDRA organization that are 100 per cent dedicated to the success of the new track and he said once they get that track built, then they can start racing again.

“As soon as we can get a track built, and the quicker we can get everything in place, the quicker we can proceed.”
