The Estevan Comprehensive School cheer team were the best of the province after winning the grand championship after provincials last week.

They finished with a score of 90.1 out of 94.84 last weekend in Saskatoon. A total of 1,400 athletes from across the province competed, and the ECS cheer team were tops in the Small Senior II schools.

“I thought we’d do quite well since we did well at Best of the West in Regina the previous weekend,” said Elecs cheer coach Bonnie Chepil-Kvamme, a longtime coach with the team. At the Regina Best of the West Cheer and Dance competition, held at the University of Regina, ECS was second only to Yorkton Regional among the Small Senior cheer teams with their performance with a score of 73.10. Their score for the tosses and choreography were a section-high 37.3.

The team has been performing “excellently” this year, according to Chepil-Kvamme, and has been helped out a lot by community coach Danica Friess.

That field that included Saskatoon’s Tommy Douglas, Birch Hills, Yorkton Regional, Weyburn, Regina’s Winston Knoll, North Battleford’s John Paul II and Regina’s Thom Collegiate.
