The Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs boys and girls curling teams weren’t able to get any wins out of a Moose Jaw bonspiel they went to but the young team is learning and going to be able to get better over a busy season.

The bonspiel in Moose Jaw was their first of the season according to coach Pauline Ziehl-Grimsrud.

“Our play got better as the bonspiel went on so we were really pleased with that,” she said. “We have two brand new teams this year. We were pleased as coaches how well they responded to the different ice conditions. Overall it was a success, however unfortunately we didn’t have any wins this weekend.”

The young team will have four or five more events planned, starting in January. The team is practicing frequently and playing in the Thursday open league at the Power Dodge Curling Centre.

“They’re getting game play in and we have practice time but our events schedule will start coming on pretty heavily in January,” Ziehl-Grimsrud said.

The club is hosting a U-18 bonspiel Jan. 12-13, 2018 and are hoping to have the high school teams and any other teams with players under 18.

“That’s usually a pretty positive event for our kids playing in their home rink,” she said. “Both of the (ECS) teams will be playing that weekend.”
Grades 6-8 teams will also be playing in that event.

High school districts and regionals hosts will be named later. By that time the team is likely going to have a lot more experience in shots and decision making under their belts.

“Certainly our focus this year is to have our competitive teams peak at the right time,” Ziehl-Grimsrud said. “High school districts and regionals and hopefully on to provincials is going to be our focus. We’re going to take all the steps we need to and do all our prepwork to be as successful as we can in that event.”
