Elecs football team shuts out Vanier

The Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs football team posted a convincing victory Saturday, defeating the Moose Jaw Vanier Vikings 35-0 in Moose Jaw.

Coach Mark Schott said it was one of the most lopsided victories in the 11-year history of the program, if not the most lopsided, and he believes it was also their first shutout.

“We were coming off of our bye week, and we really emphasized that if we’re going to achieve anything this year, we have to do it as a team, that no one player can carry the load or do it by themselves,” said Schott.

The Elecs led 14-0 at half-time, and dashed any hope of a Moose Jaw comeback by adding two touchdowns in the third quarter for a 28-point lead.

ECS dominated on the ground. Jonah Bachorcik led the attack, as he rushed for 129 yards on 13 carries.

On the defensive side of the ball, they forced numerous turnovers, including two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. And when the Vikings had their deepest drive of the game, not only was it snuffed out by a Hunter Eagles interception, but Eagles returned the ball more than 100 yards for a touchdown.

Eagles finished with two touchdowns on the day. Bachorcik, Kaleb Bechtold and Chase Bartel also scored majors. Ilia Korita converted all five majors.

The next edition of the Mercury will have more on this story.
