It’s still early for high school basketball, but the Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs senior boys won their first tournament of the year in Weyburn.

New head coach Carmon Lindquist was happy with the way the team performed over the weekend at the Weyburn Christmas Classic.

“Expectations going in was that this was the first game that we played at the start of the tournament,” said Lindquist. They took on Moose Jaw Vanier, who had played five games already this year, and beat them 82-75. John Andres led the team with 25 points.

After that, they played Indian Head in the semifinal and won 107-57. Andres scored 25 to lead the team.

“Everyone hit the scorecard in that game,” said Lindquist. “Our rookies put in more minutes than our starters and our rookies played very well.”

The six-team tournament put the winners of the first games in one bracket and the other teams in another. Weyburn and Indian Head had won their games so the winner of ECS and host Weyburn Eagles would win the tournament’s A-side.

And the Elecs came out victorious, 73-67 over the Eagles. Andres put 30 points in.

There are five returning Grade 12s this year, including Andres, Jack McGeough, Lais Lindquist, Angelo Derain and Feranmi Adebyi.

“It was a great result,” said Carmon Lindquist. “We’ve got a good mix of veterans and rookies and the guys are really coming together nicely as we prepare for the season. We’re really looking forward to this weekend in Brandon.

The Elecs will be in a three-day, 32-team tournament there.
