The Estevan Comprehensive School (ECS) Elecs senior girls basketball team finished second at the Notre Dame Tournament in Wilcox on the weekend.

The teams that entered played a round robin, with the top two teams advancing to the gold medal game and the other two teams playing for bronze.

ECS opened the tournament with a 75-46 victory over the host Notre Dame team Friday but then lost 65-46 to Regina’s Harvest City Christian Academy. They routed Yorkton Sacred Heart 86-25 in their first game Saturday and advanced to the final, which they lost 71-37 to Harvest City.

“Even though we lost by more points the second time we played them, it didn’t feel that way,” said coach Jessie Smoliak. “We played a better game against Harvest City but our shots just didn’t fall. Joel Wells (Harvest City coach) admitted the same thing saying that he felt the score should have been closer.

“He commended our team with saying he appreciated that they didn’t give up and fought until the end of the game. This is exactly what we preach as coaches and I’m happy that our girls are so coachable.”

The four Grade 12s on the team – Sarah Dacuycuy, Taylor Haux, Talissa Gervais and Shanelle Rioux – had strong weekends. Rioux took a couple offensive charges in the final against Harvest City, Gervais was a defensive threat and Haux was a big contributor on rebounding and post moves in the key.

Dacuycuy was dominant on the score sheet again with 18 points in the final game and won the MVP in the final for ECS.

Grade 11 Bethany Montebon had 24 points in the opener against Notre Dame.

The Elecs next tournament is in Regina at the Balfour tournament this weekend. They will open against Saskatoon Bethlehem on Dec. 13.

The senior boys team, meanwhile, had the weekend off and will compete at a tournament in Brandon, Man., this coming weekend.
