South East high school golfers thrive in opening day of provincials

Golfers from the Estevan Comprehensive School (ECS) and other southeast schools had great showings during the opening day of the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association’s provincial golf championship Friday at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Course in Estevan.

Chase Gedak, who is from ECS and a member of the South East team this weekend, fired a 3-under-par 69 on Friday to take a four-stroke lead into Saturday’s second and final round. Gaige Calkins, who is on the South West team, is second after a 73.

Jayden Dudas, another ECS and Team South East golfer, is tied for third at 74. TJ Baker from the North West team also shot a 74.

Other results for South East golfers on Friday were Theoren West of Wawota shot a 78 to sit fifth, Darien Herlick of Weyburn and Drew Fenwick of ECS each had an 81 and are tied for 11th, and Ryan Chernoff of ECS is tied for 19th after an 85.

The boys South East team sits first after a total score of 211 in the first round. They have a 25-stroke lead on the second place North Central team.

On the girls side, the South East entry sits second with a team score of 182, one stroke behind Battle West. Horizon Central is third at 188.

Individual scores for the South East girls golfers are Maddy Berry of Moosomin sits seventh after a 92 in the opening round. Hallie Bourassa of Radville is ninth (104), Jade Krainyk of Redvers is tied for 13th (108) and Kaysha Turner of the Gordon F. Kells High School in Carlyle is 33rd (159).

The second round is scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Eighty-seven golfers are entered this year’s tournament.
