The Weyburn Comprehensive School Eagles won a pair of close games in Estevan on Wednesday night to win the McLeod Series against the Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs for the second straight year.
The Weyburn senior girls basketball team defeated Estevan 67-59 in the first game on Wednesday night, while Weyburn’s senior boys basketball team beat Estevan 87-85 in the second contest. Weyburn won the best-of-four series 3-1, although their edge in point differential was just seven points, at 289-282.
Estevan had a three-point edge in differential heading into Wednesday night's games.
The Elecs held a 26-22 lead late in the second quarter of the senior girls game, but Weyburn charged back to lead 29-28 at half time. The Eagles scored the first 10 points of the third quarter, but then Estevan went on a 13-1 run to lead 41-40.
Weyburn had a 44-43 lead after three quarters.
The Eagles then outscored Estevan 23-16 in the fourth quarter, punctuated by a buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of the game.
As for the senior boys game, the Elecs had a 23-21 lead after the first quarter, and took over early in the second to lead 41-29 at one point over a team they had beaten four straight times this year. But Weyburn chipped away, and Estevan's lead was down to 47-42 at half time.
Estevan dominated again in the third quarter, and had a double-digit lead midway through the frame. But Weyburn started making three-pointers, and it was a 67-64 game after three quarters.
Weyburn continued making three-pointers in the fourth quarter, and took the lead early in the frame. The lead would be swapped several times the rest of the way, but Weyburn would make a few more long shots to win the game and the series.
