Local youth football players had the opportunity to learn from some top coaches Saturday at Woodlawn Athletic Field.

The South Sask. Selects football program held a camp for young players with Penta Completions Estevan Minor Football and the Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs. The Selects have been taking teams to San Antonio, Texas, for the annual Pigskin Classic tournament for a number of years, and have won championships, with local players playing a key role.

Zeljko Stefanovich, who is a coach and director with the Selects program, said this year is the first in which they have been touring the province and instructing young players through free camps.

“It’s three hours of fundamental football skills and a lot of learning,” said Stefanovich.

Players were divided based on positions, and received advice to improve their games. Tackling was part of the day.

About 50 players attended the camp.

They were in Weyburn on Friday and will be in other communities for the province.

The camps also provide exposure for the program.

“There’s a real need for us to be able to try and bring some of our coaches to the smaller communities that don’t always get that,” he said.

It’s also exposure for Q-Collar, which is the sponsor for the tour and a piece of equipment used by the Selects to reduce concussions.

The next edition of the Mercury will have more on this story.
