Wagstaff a national all-star

Nathan Wagstaff’s summer wrapped up in much the same way as it began: by receiving an award for his lacrosse play.

Early in July, Wagstaff was named the most valuable player at the provincial bantam lacrosse tournament. Then at the end of August, he was selected for the all-star line award at the Canadian Lacrosse Association minor box lacrosse championships in Coquitlam, B.C.

One person from each team was selected for the all-star squad. He compared it to having an MVP selected for each team.

“You get a jersey and you get a picture with all of the other MVPs,” said Wagstaff.

It was a special feeling to win the award. He was very excited when he found out.

“I thought I had a really good tournament this year. I played hard,” he said.

Wagstaff believes there were a lot of deserving players from Team Saskatchewan, as they also played hard.

Saskatchewan finished with a 2-5 record. They split their first four games, winning 5-2 over Manitoba and 6-5 over Nova Scotia. Losses were 9-5 to B.C. and 14-2 to Ontario. Then they lost 9-7 to the First Nations team to close out the round robin, and 20-0 to Ontario in the semifinal.

Their final game was a 10-6 loss to the First Nations entry in the bronze medal contest.

Wagstaff finished the tournament with six goals and eight points in five round robin games, but was held off the scoresheet in the playoffs.

Also on Team Saskatchewan at the tournament was Estevan’s Chase Foord. He had four goals in five games in the round robin, and added a goal in the bronze medal game against Team First Nations.
